I
t became important for car manufacturers to increase the security of their automobiles so High-security keys became the choice for keys around the mid-1970s.
The first Lexus, the LS400, was manufactured in 1990. It had one type of cylinder key and no transponder. However, the key blade was not the typical mechanical key that was cut on the edge. This was a high-security key blade called a sidewinder. These key blades are not cut to specifications on the edge but on the surface of the key blade itself.
Throughout the 1990s, more types of keys became available for this model, and transponders were added to the high-security cylinder keys in 1997 and beyond.
In a Lexus, the locks, to accommodate these keys, have split wafers in them. Whole or standard wafers are metal wafers that have a hole in the middle to accommodate the key blade so that it can be lifted when the key turns. Split wafers are the same except they are split vertically into two halves. When the key turns, the two halves are raised simultaneously.
