Lock Like Magic: How Do Key Fobs Work

Car Locksmith: A Guide on Key Fob Systems

If you've been keeping up with trends in locking systems then you are probably familiar with key fobs. They are usually small keyring-like objects or cards you hold up to a door locking mechanism to unlock them. Most of them are compact and easy to carry around. Since each fob is programmed to open a particular door, they add an extra layer of security.

Just like most other modern-day wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi or your electronics remote controls, the science behind key fobs remains a mystery to most. To some, it may seem that these devices are as close to magic as we've come yet. However, the inner workings of key fobs are really not as complicated as you might think.

How Do Key Fobs Work?

Key fobs use radio waves to send instructions to a reader device positioned at your door latch. When the key fob comes near the reader, the waves are transmitted, triggering the locking mechanism in the door to open.

For this system to work, 4 major things come into play.
  • The key fob
  • The reader
  • The locking mechanism
  • The door

Configuration

The whole process begins with configuration, whereby a code is imprinted on a microchip inside the key fob. As you wave the fob in front of the reader, the chip starts communicating using a system called radio frequency identification (RFID). It is how the frequency's identity can be confirmed. In some respect, this can be compared to impressing a barcode on a credit card.

If the code and the frequency line up, the locking mechanism will be triggered to open the door. Every fob has its own unique code, and each one is usually assigned to a specific door. Alternatively, the manufacturer can produce several fobs that communicate with one reader using a similar code. This will allow access to the same door from a number of dedicated key fobs.

What Is a Proximity Key?

There is another special kind of fob called a proximity key. Proximity keys are different from ordinary key fobs in that they don't need to be placed right next to the reader to unlock the door. Instead, they can communicate with the reader through RFID from a much greater distance and instruct it to open the door. Proximity keys unlock the door as you approach it. They can work even from inside your pocket or bag.

Proximity keys are mainly used for vehicles, such as when you need to have your  car's push-to-start key  nearby for the vehicle to start. However, they are slowly being integrated into home and other building access control systems.
